Tracey Moffatt

Tracey Moffatt is an Australian artist, renowned for her aspiration and devotion towards Aboriginal people. Seen through her artwork, Tracey challenges common sterotypes to persue irony within her shoots. Moffatt was born in Queensland, Australia on November 12th 1960, a somewhat sentimentle time for Indegenous Australians in relation to the fact that Aboriginals did not have equal rights to those of their white counterparts. Tracey's work often features signs and symbols to re-live and capture the exploition, violence, racism and oppression experienced by Aboriginal people in the past. In conjuction with Moffatt's photographic series 'Something More' 1989 is an untitled image seen above (first image). This photograph was choreographed in a way to loosely represent her life growing up as an aboriginal, female individual. The foreground pictures an eager looking indigenous woman gazing up towards the sky, alluding to her lust for freedom and hence the title 'something more'. Seen in the backgound is a conspicuous woman and an unkown white man consuming alcohol. This, indefinately portraying the idea of potential domestic violence and mistreatment of indigenous others from white settlers as a whole. The run-down shack is also seen as another symbol to represent neglegence and mistreatment towards Aborginigals and the inequality they were faced with.
