David LaChappelle

Religion, Jesus and God are often associated with ideas of purity and innocence and the act of not committing ‘sins’. David LaChappelle contradicts these ideas and thus poses extreme irony within in his series ‘Jesus Is My Homeboy.’ One of his photographs (third pictured above) appears to be an appropriation of the Italian Renaissance painting ‘The Last Supper’ by Leonardo Da Vinci, unlike the original work, LaChapelle staged shifty looking men and promiscuous women gathered around a table sharing and consuming alcohol and cigarettes. The men appear to be in some sort of confrontation and aggressing each other as apposed to the calm nature and peaceful environment seen Da Vinci’s work. This contrasts the two works and highlights the often morality of the 21st Century.
